Hello!
Hope you all had an amazing Bank Holiday weekend. Of course, that meant no show this past Monday.
We’re back this Monday 3rd June with a superb selection of comedians at Too Far Comedy. Come and join us at the Artillery Arms. Doors open at 7.15pm.
BEST IN THE WORLD
Regular readers of this newsletter and attendees of Too Far Comedy know that I don’t shy away from saying how hard I think Stand-Up Comedy is. I openly showcase my many failures in my YouTube Vlog.
In fact, my third gig was my worst ever. You can see it here. Most people would have quit there and then. So why didn’t I? And why do I keep going?
It’s because between 2015-18 I spoke to over 100 World and Olympic champions. I know that sounds random but stick with me. The recurring theme of the Best in the World with Richard Parr podcast was about failure and how these champions would fail so many times before they would succeed. It inspired me to continue in comedy. And it still does.
There are a lot of lessons that I learned from these winners that I still try to use today. So I’ve decided to start sharing them in a new newsletter called the Best in the World. Each Monday I’ll share an inspiring short story from a World or Olympic champion explaining what they do differently from the rest of us to be the Best in the World.
Monday Motivation will be a tip that can hopefully help us improve our own lives and will kick-start our week!
It might even help motivate you to get back up on stage, the night after you BOMB!
I’d love it if you could please sign up here or share it with someone you think might enjoy it.
Thanks!
Just before we get to the Funny List, a quick heads up that in next week’s newsletter the application form to apply to perform at Too Far Comedy in July becomes available.
😂 Far Too Funny List
📺 Watching - Demetri Martin: Demetri Deconstructed on Netflix. Demetri has a unique style and it shows in the editing of this special. Broadcast in black and white he uses a lot of text on the screen, often adding further tags or ideas to his jokes. I can’t work out if they’re extra jokes he’s tried before or just wanted to share his thought process.
🎧 Listening - Last week I went to The Podcast Show in London and listened to a talk from the podcast commissioners at the BBC called Who Commissions Podcasts and What are They Looking For? The commissioners were very proud of the Call Jonathan Pie podcast they launched last year. So this week I listened to the first episode. If you don’t know who Jonathan Pie is, he’s a fictional character portrayed by British comedian Tom Walker. Pie is a liberal political correspondent who rants about politics. His podcast has an Alan Partridge Mid Morning Matters vibe, with Pie giving his strong opinions when he’s off the air.
📕 Reading - Speaking of the BBC, there’s a nice article about the comedian Paul Smith: From online jokes to playing arenas. It’s interesting to hear about his journey from doing a stand-up course in 2006 and the part the Hot Water Comedy club in Liverpool has played in it.
