Hello!
Thank you to everyone who has voted for Too Far Comedy for best open spot comedy night at the Chortle Awards. If you haven’t already, voting closes today, so please do it quick!
Thanks also to everyone who applied for a spot to perform with us in March. Apologies if you didn't get a spot this time, we were inundated with applicants. Spots for April will go live in this newsletter in a few weeks.
We have some fantastic line-ups planned at the Artillery Arms in Old Street. Do come and join us on a Monday.
Now, you may not know but a few years ago I used to do a podcast. “Not another comedian with a podcast,” I hear you groan. Well, it was before I started doing comedy and it was a podcast interviewing World and Olympic champions to find out what they do differently from the rest of us. It was called the Best in the World with Richard Parr. [Don’t I look different!] With my sporting accolades limited to the “Most Improved Player Award” for Goldstone Rovers Under-13 side, there were so many incredible nuggets of information from these champions that I still use today.
I mention this because this week I caught up with a former colleague on her podcast Story by Story. During the conversation, I spoke a lot about Too Far Comedy and explained the lessons I learned from these sporting greats that helps me to be persistent in comedy and drives me to try to improve at this craft. Take a listen.
Okay, here’s the list.
😂 Far Too Funny List
📺 Watching - There’s great emotion from a master storyteller in Mike Birbiglia’s The Old Man and The Pool on Netflix. He does some hilarious act-outs. I was laughing out loud when he talks about getting weighed, along with when he does an impression of a rich person’s doorbell!
🎧 Listening - You might remember Isy Suttie for her performance of the wonderful Dobby in the Channel 4 show Peep Show. Well, the actor and comedian has some excellent advice on writing comedy in her chat with Michael Rosen on the Word of Mouth podcast on BBC Sounds.
📕 Reading - “The best way to get an audience on your side is to open up about your faults.” This is a highlighted quote from an excellent article by Matt Ruby called Ten Lessons from Standup Comedy That Will Make You a Better Speaker.
